Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
The cover is back on. I had no idea how I was going to reinstall. Just poking around thinking about it, I lifted the hatch as I normally would from the cockpit. It pivoted on the hinge and didn't move around at all. I had everything I needed to install the screws but I didn't expect to be putting th...

Will do. Not sure how yet but I figure out a way.fallguy1000 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 5:18 pm Tab to the cover. Even if you need to putty up the chopper.
I did use some peel ply on the seal coat. It will be ready for a layer of glass.

Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
The wood block attached to the cover pulled away clean. It was not glued at all to the cover. As best I can tell, a spritz with the chopper gun on the ends and less of a spritz on the top/forward edge. What you can see got gel coat, what you can't see got nothing. Maybe it just that polyester resin ...

Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
I took the wood block off the hinge. That was easy because the screws were never sealed and were not holding well. The wood was never sealed either. The screws used were sheet metal screws and clearly not pre drilled. Anyway, I seal coated the wood. Waiting for that to cure. I can reglue the block e...

I saw somewhere that slicers are adding a feature where they can divide a part into pieces that will fit your bed. You assemble and glue the pieces to make something big. I can't remember if it was Prusa or Cura.
Might be a handy tool in the bag if you are using the prints as a core.

Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
Got the cover lifted. As suspected, the block was sprayed in place with the chopper gun. Not even Elmer's glue on wood block against the hatch to hold it in place. No ripped out screws, no cracked fiberglass. This has me thinking. It held for 18 years like this. Maybe there is not much stress on the...

Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
Now that I've had time to think on it, I'm pretty sure there is not a lot of weight or stress on the hinge. The lift struts take a good portion of the weight. The block the hinge was mounted to was solid wood cleat sealed with gel coat. The gel coat didn't seal the wood very well. It is a 7 foot wid...

Re: Engine Cover Chaparral
My neighbor helped me lift the hatch back into place. Now all I need is a factory jig to lift it off, fix it, and reposition it. It looks like the wood hinge block separated from the hatch cleanly. I'll have to fashion a curved wood block, bed it in epoxy, probably a layer or 5 of biax for insurance...

Engine Cover Chaparral
I was flushing the engine tonight, rested my hand on the engine cover and the whole thing broke away from the hinge. This cover is too heavy for me to lift alone. It is also the wrap around seat in the rear of the cockpit. Thankfully, it didn't touch the engine. Basically, the hinge mount was a bloc...
