Re: FS14 Build - Pics, etc.

It's not going to be a problem. Very little of the strength comes from the glue in between the panels. Once you fiberglass tape these joints they will be very strong. The reason for keeping a space is so the panels aren't pushing against each other which can lead to bowed or warped panels. If the sh...

Re: FS14: jaydillyo's first build

- Sand - Prime - Guide coat - Sand - Fair - Sand - Fair - Sand Even though there are a few minor spots I was about to declare fairing over when I accidentally hit the side with the edge of my RO Sander and put a good gouge in it. I guess that means one more coat of fairing. Getting close to the poin...

Re: FS14: jaydillyo's first build

Well, I'm back at it. I have been fairing. Today I put a clear coat of epoxy over the whole exterior. As I was doing it the flaws in my fairing job started to appear. None of them are horrible. I am hoping that primer will hide them. Either way, next I will give the epoxy a light sanding and then pu...

Re: FS14: jaydillyo's first build

I squared off the transom and chines. I kind of made a mess of it. I had to spend a lot of time removing hardened epoxy. After cleaning things up as best I could, I sanded the entire bottom and put on a coat of epoxy. I think I'm going to forego the spray rails and start fairing. I'd like to at leas...

JL Audio MHX280/4 on the cheap

I have been keeping an eye out for some stereo equipment for my boat (when it's finished) and came across a deal that I couldn't pass up. I thought I'd share it in case anybody else is interested. JL Audio MHX280/4 http://www.jlaudio.com/mhx280-4-marine-audio-mhx-amplifiers-98403 $169 at Creative Au...

Re: FS14: jaydillyo's first build

Holy moly! Has it been almost 2 years since my last post? Well, last year I didn't do much except put the rub rail on. So far this year I have put on a skeg and some strakes. I'm still debating wether or not to put on splash rails. I'd like to flip it soon and glass in the stringers. As usual, I'm h...

Re: FS155 (FS17 scaled to 90%) Completed

Thanks for the review on the Suzuki. I have had my eye on this motor and haven't seen any real performance reports. Are you happy that you went with the 30 hp or do you think the 25 hp would have been fine? As far as I can tell the only difference between the two is the 30 hp has a higher rpm limit.

Initial fiberglass cloth sanding

I sanded the entire hull of my FS14. How much more sanding I should do? I'm worried that I will sand into the cloth.

Re: which sandpaper?

I ended up using Shopsmith 40 grit from Lowes. It was a bit pricey, but I had to use a lot less of it than the Diablo or Gator (which I also tried out).
