Re: General motor question

Would your kicker in this case do double duty as the motor for a tender? In which case I assume the steering linkage would be removable/ only installed at need?

Re: gelcoat over epoxy repair

At the risk of raising a zombie thread, is the consensus that your own MarinEpoxy is gel-coat compatible? I fix a lot of sailing dinghies for our club, and I have discovered that quickfair isn't, so have taken to sealing with straight epoxy, then putting boats back on the water for a couple of weeks...

small dinghy repair

I volunteer with a local sailing club and have a couple more broken boats to deal with... The first, I built up with marinepoxy and whatever light woven cloth (weight un-known) we had lying around the club, but it took like 18 layers which is just getting silly. The second I've cut away some of the ...

Re: Moving upstream in a displacement boat?

Isn't the standard formula for most displacement hulls that V=1.4* sqrt(WL)? (OK, if I recall, that's in knots rather than mph, but close enough). So if you're calculating a 4kt displacement speed, that gives me an 8.16 foot waterline length. That's a pretty small boat. If you want to get back upstr...

Re: Corsair 13 in Turkey

Nice! Post more pictures, I'm leaning towards a corsair 13 for my next build... Could one (or more?) of the under-seat partitions be left open to the cockpit (minus the usual 3" rim) for stowage of anchors and fender and suchlike? Step one: finish phd thesis (check!) Step two: find employment (...

Re: should I epoxy coat a canvas kayak?

I'd imagine the canvas on a skin-on-frame kayak is meant to be flexible. Whereas epoxy-fiberglass is meant to me more-or-less stiff. So I don't think you can swap one for the other without totally changing the design and scantlings of the frame.

Re: Tide chart help

Nothing is as simple as it appears  Close  It's based on what is called "Mean Low Water", which is averaged over the last 19 year period. Why they chose 19 years I can't answer  Also close  It's technically based on "chart datum", which is also the height fro...

Re: hiawatha 12

this one I can't help you with, as I skipped the molds and built mine with battens. But it possibly would look a bit better with the chine panel cambered out a bit. What are your molds made of? I've heard some people use temporary screws to force the plywood to take more complex bends, if that'll &q...
