Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

Again, thanks for the input. I won't be starting for a while so no final decisions made. I built a little center console for my skiff using some 1/2 ply from Home Depot. Sandeply or something like that. Sandeply sucks. I never use plywood from there. Duly noted on the checking though and I appreciat...

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

I like tulip poplar and use it for many things, but I recognize it is kind of soft, isn't especially strong and it has little rot resistance. Tulip poplar is not a true poplar, it's a member of the magnolia family. As long as the stringers are covered in fiberglass they should stay dry, but they wo...

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

Been doing some more research. I've found the source of baltic birch I get from Russia and it's a newer factory with a good reputation. The 1/4" 4x8 sheets use WPB glue to pass the boil test and is about 1.5 pounds heavier than the same size Meranti sheet. The Okoume is several pounds lighter t...

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

Every plywood quality is the matter of the manufacturer. I would say you're right. Baltic Birch is way heavier and less bendible That makes sense. I hate handling the 3/4" stuff. Makes me realize I'm getting older. I can't imagine using the 1" thick ply. Talk about heavy. And I understand...

Thanks for the insights. Now I need to research everything else! Got one of the recommended books on the way.

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same thing. I'm not talking about Chinese or American birch. Here's a picture I took earlier of the corner of one of my sheds. The "gusset" is bare, unfinished BB with interior glue that's been directly in the weather for almost four years. It's not ...

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

My brother (Woodenyouknowit) has always been complimentary about the good insight on the forum when he built his boat. I see why! Thanks for the replies and the willingness to discuss. When I told my Bro' I bought the plans we had a nice long phone call and got some good insight from him as well. Ba...

Re: PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate it. I haven't seen it in 4x8 sheets, do they even make them? I can get it in 5x5 sheets and 4x8 sheets from 1/8" thru 1". The plys and grades are all the same except 5x5 uses interior glue and 4x8 uses exterior glue. I can also get the Meranti bu...

PC22 - plans bought; couple of questions...

Thanks to Woodenyouknowit and his OB17 I have succumbed to seriously consider the PC22. Got to go out on his OB17 this last summer and it was nice seeing the smile on his face driving a boat he built. My wife has always liked the relaxation of being out on a pontoon boat and since we live close to s...
