Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

First of all we need to understand that Barrelroll has to have a cabin. An open boat is not an option for our weather. 50f with light rain is a normal fishing day here. I like his drawing for the panga cabin. I bet there is no more high weight than what a guy standing up to drive gives, if he build...

Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

The Pangas are not suited for much mass up high, so full height cabins are not really practical. Or the boat is gonna roll abeam, tip over in heavy seas, etc. Agree. Too much weight. I was thinking open pg25 with just the pilot house console plan sold here and nothing else. Much less windage. What ...

Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

Hey Barrelroll I run a 22 SeaSport out of Homer and Seward all summer long. I will tell you it will pound the fillings out of your teeth running much over 20 into 2-3 foot head seas. The charter boats you spoke of are 6-8 foot longer and a lot heavier than my SeaSport and that lets them run through...

Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

Panga with a pilothouse console then. Who cares if it's wet when the pilothouse catches it all? That's my thought, it would be pretty easy to add a simple pilot house to the cabin panga. Just need decent wipers. I run an aluminum skiff with a windshield and full canvas enclosure. It's our first boa...

Re: Best boat for running into chop/ head-sea comfortably?

I live on the inside passage, we have a lot of 2-10 mile wide north south channels and usually get an afternoon north or south wind creating 1-3' steep tight afternoon chop. I usually get passed by a charter boat or 2 coming back from the halibut grounds while my little 17 footer is getting pounded ...

Re: Panga Glass Schedule Questions?

Building notes... Got a link/ page/ drawing they are on in the panga plans? They are vary vague. The building notes just has a link to a couple pages on the web and isn't even in the standard plans. I know what I'll probably do after building a Tolman though would like to figure out what the design...

Panga Glass Schedule Questions?

Maybe I missed it somewhere in the Panga plans though I'm a little unclear on what gets glassed and what gets just epoxy on it. -Frames/ stringers do they get glassed or just taped to the hull? -Sole/ Deck, I'm assuming 1 layer of glass both sides though can't find a call out for glassing the sole. ...

Re: Full Pilot house on a GS28X or PG25C Panga?

So an idea is to steal a page out of the Renn Tolman design book and add 3" chine flats to a Panga widening the Panga to 7'9" at it's widest point. When Renn Tolman started adding cuddy cabins to his original 7' wide Standard skiff he determined it wasn't enough boat to support the weight ...

Re: Full Pilot house on a GS28X or PG25C Panga?

I've got a pilot house roughly mocked up on the GS. Frame spacing makes for a 6' long pilot house floor. The back of the pilot house falls where the back of the console is in the study plans. Drop the sole to the bottom of the stringers in the middle of the pilot house and the peak of the roof is ro...

Re: Full Pilot house on a GS28X or PG25C Panga?

I've been in the DE in all kinds of water. I've always felt safe, but I've often felt uncomfortable. The shallow deadrise carries well forward, making for some hard slapping/pounding particularly in quartering seas. It would be great in larger period waves; we deal with a lot of wind chop. It does ...
