Re: Zest 14’

The PVC tube as form for the sailways seems like a big fail. The PVC by itself of course is not strong enough. I failed at wrapping FRP around the aluminum tube. I cut small 25mm diameter aluminum tube, using an angle grinder. I have a slot from end to end, widened to 4mm and ground and filed smooth...

Re: Zest 14’

Inkeeping with the concept of the 50 foot boat. It looks not bad from 50 feet. I still need to do some work on the mast. Rudder has been made and needs the rudder stock and tiller, Wings need to be painted. Some touchups on the paint job. Rigging. Sail is ready to go. https://i.ibb.co/DCrjH1L/Dinghy...

Re: Zest 14’

Interesting how winter passes, bringing ideas of how to improve projects, at a time when you can do little. I was working on an idea for the mast. https://i.ibb.co/nMgRQNH/Mast-5-30.jpg The Dinghy mast sitting on the catamaran. I haven’t seen this being done. My tubing has a max length of 2.5 meters...

Re: HC16 - Modified bow shape

I’d strongly recommend the smaller finishing router.

Re: HC16 - Modified bow shape

Hi. I use and recommend a finishing router (small 1/4 inch), way better than a jig saw.I make the patterns out of MDF, using a straight 8mm router bit. It makes for nicely faired panels. I then use a flush finishing router bit to cut the panels. Keep a sharp eye on the bearing, lubricate and tighten...

Re: A DIY Carbon Fiber Mast

Getting to cold now for epoxy. I don’t have a heated space so I will pause. I’m pretty confident with my trial and error approach, just have to wait and see. According to a book published by Glen-L “Rigging Small Sailboats”, the force on this sail would be 100Kg (225 lbs) in a 20 knot wind. The cros...

Re: A DIY Carbon Fiber Mast

As for carbon fiber mast, I think it’s going to be a certain amount of guess work, trial and error to get it right. I’m researching strength and stiffness data trying to have a better, more informed idea. I don’t feel any further ahead. Not that I’m a particularly bright guy, but. Each company that ...

Re: A DIY Carbon Fiber Mast

Don't try this with the pvc attached. It will not work. I am probably being patronizing here, but don't want you to wreck the work which infusion would do now with the pvc creating voids. Thanks. Fallguy. I had a brief look at infusion. It seems interesting and way beyond anything I would be capabl...

Re: A DIY Carbon Fiber Mast

Another test by Dragon Plate https://dragonplate.com/carbon-fiber-101-standard-modulus-intermediate-modulus-high-modulus-and-ultra-high-modulus Shows strength and stiffness numbers of different grades of carbon fiber. Strengths are nearly equal, between standard, intermediate and high modulus. I’m m...
