Re: GT23

Thanks for your quick reply..... trying mainly to even out dimpling, today, i put a neat coat on her bottom, using FAST hardener....In places, things began to gel too fast (in the pot, on the roller. drips.....but once I got it spread out, the curing process slowed.....On the Second layer 2 hours la...

Re: GT23

Gonna put 2-3 neat epoxy layers on her bottom tomorrow..... I plan to cover that with Petit Vivid ablative bottom paint. Not gonna use a primer under the bottom paint. That is OK, right? Other question: Would it be unwise to lay the bottom paint on 'in the window' of the last neat coat? Or should I ...

Re: GT23

All very interesting. I wondered whether FAST and SLOW hardener could be mixed to adjust the time frame. Will try that technique. It is hard to know how much time to spend on the bottom, as this will be my only pass at it. She's huge, with a superstructure, and will never again be upside-down (we ho...

Re: GT23

Searching for that glassy slick ready-for-the-water planing bottom, free of the prickly eruptions I'd been suffering from, I carried out an experiment based on your recommendations: 1) I used warmed epoxy. 2) I used a stick to stir it by hand, and gently at that ..........I did not have time to rig ...

Re: GT23

You can bet that on my next build I will adjust my use of graphite... too late now. Live and learn. I've got it sanded smooth, and coated with epoxy. Just need to find an off-ramp, some 'final coat' for her bottom. Was going for the neat epoxy, but now I am awaiting fallguy's reply to peewee's quest...

Re: GT23

Ok, all that is gonna be helpful. I appreciate y'all. I will mix manually. I do think that this particular mixer-drill-bit that I have been using of late is much worse for producing bubbles than earlier, differently shaped ones I had used. Or it could be that I just never noticed the prickly finish ...

Re: GT23

All very interesting. I am indeed using a high-speed mixer, a paint mixer drill bit on a power drill. And it puts a hell of a lot of bubbles in the epoxy, I have noticed....Just didn't until now make the connection. Duh. I'll mix it manually. ... I have vacuum equipment... A good new pump (the one f...

Re: GT23

I do see bubbles. ... I believe that to be the problem . I have the graphite surface pretty well sanded smooth, and now 4 neatcoats in. I see the bubbles forming as the epoxy sets. Then as it cures the bubbles seem to collapse and harden into little hard prickles. This is not surface roughness comin...

Re: GT23

I have an epoxy question. But first, for anyone listening: Heed peewee's previous post of cracker larry's method. I read it, started out following it, then got sloppy. Mistake. The graphite seemed to mix just fine! Bad lumpy. More sanding and epoxy layers and troubles. Follow peewee's instructions, ...
