CS25 Strakes layout

Post by hbav984 »

Ok,

Need some help on the location of my strakes. Do you reference the centerline or do you go from the chime? Does anybody have some creative ideas on how to make these... ie build a damn and pour resin???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you plan for one each side, put them halfway between chine and keel.
Most prefer two per side: divide that length by three.
To run them that way gives them a curvature that somewhat mimics the path of the water along the hull.
The exact location of the strakes is unimportant.

I'll answer the second question. Most seem to make them from wood and glass over with tape. If you don't want to do that Joel Shine used an aluminium mould and filled with chopped fibre and epoxy.

Down near the bottom of the page. He put on some fairing first. I suppose it would be stronger to do it before, but the fairing would be harder to do.

It would be a little spendy but you can make them out of solid glass. Use 1.5 or 2 inch angle iron or aluminium for the mold. After waxing fill the mold with a mash made of epoxy-chopped glass-milled glass or what ever you have a bunch of.
When pulled from the mold the part will be pretty flexible and that will let it conform to the hull easily. Glue them on and you should be good to go.

Is there anything wrong with white oak for strakes?

With enough glass over them, almost anything would work. I'd not use White oak alone due to the swelling factor:

But if you put glass over them they'll be fine. Of course then why use oak? The extra strength isn't a factor with glass on top.

As I wanted the bunks on my trailer to sit under the stringers, I put one strake halfway between the chine and the mid-line.

I made them out of 42mm hoop pine cut across the diagonal on a table saw, initially glued and screwed them to the hull, then removed the screws and filled the holes with epoxy-woodflour. I covered them with two layers of staggered 6oz biaxial tape.

They are fairly aggressive strakes but they seem to work well. The boat tracks well and if I pull it into a tight turn at 40 kts and feed in all 250 horses that I have available, I can just get the boat to power-slide!
