Titebond 3 under epoxy

Post by rbecker08 »

Curious if this would cause a problem but I have some more woodworking style stuff coming up on my build and curious if using Titebond 3 to glue board up then attaching to the hull and covering with 3 coats of epoxy will cause issues. Needing to put some hardwood over plywood edges and glue a panel together, I am just more used to traditional glues and it would be easier. Thanks Rich

I’d say it’s surely fine if not structural. Possibly even OK if it is, but would be highly dependent on design and into “on your own” territory.

Sounds like this is aesthetic, though, so should be totally good.

While TB3 is an excellent woodworker's glue and is waterproof, it does not have the strength of epoxy. Since I do not know what you are going to use it for I would use epoxy, just for the strength of it. Especially attaching to the hull.

It is done all the time.

A few places you would not...

Butt bonds or edge bonds of core in a foam sandwich process.

One you will..

Edge and end gluing of wood strip planks before applying an epoxy glass skin in canoe and kayak building.

Yup fallguy that is a good description of what I am doing.

It will have epoxy anyway as the hardwood left gaps trying to take the curve

But progress is moving along

These strips were all edge-glued with TB3 before coating each side with epoxy and glass.
