Re: VG23 New Build
Thanks Jeff/CapeMan/Olivier. It is really starting to feel and look more like a boat all the time.
The boss also ended her job a few days after me, so we had a few days away to celebrate. Of course, it coincided with the Crowdstrike chaos, so not exactly restful at the end. Got back today, three days later than planned, and probably more tired than when we departed...
Anyway, we were also thinking of the boat. Bought some wood on the drive back from the airport to frame the fore-hatch. Also some other bits and pieces for the sliding companionway hatch. And after getting back I measured/cut some more pieces for the starboard storage area, where plates/cups etc. will be stored. I'll fit that area over the next day or two and post some more photos.
Five weeks now with, hopefully, no interruptions, so should be some decent progress, fingers crossed.
Mick

Test fit of cockpit instruments. Left-to-right, NASA Marine Clipper unit (combined depth and speed). Plastimo Contest compass. Also Linux running free OpenCPN chart-plotter software with free NOAA charts and GPS position via the small black antenna. 3/8" polycarbonate over the top of the plotter. Total for the chart-plotter itself, not including laptop, was just the cost of the screen (~$100), cables (~$20), and GPS antenna (~$10).
You can see we are currently located somewhere in the middle of the continent (ashore on half-pay!).
Only pain was that I scratched up the polycarbonate making it (first time cutting/drilling/fitting that stuff) so I'm going to make another and be more careful (extra $60).
Overall, I'm pleased with the setup.
For the rest of the day I'm glueing in the shelves that are in the starboard storage area, plus some other odd-jobs.

Re: VG23 New Build
Nice work Mick!!! I hope it is not too hot out there!!! Jeff
Re: VG23 New Build
Thanks Jeff, currently about 90F daytime. We're pretty high so it rarely gets above that. Occasionally >100F but not this year (yet!). We don't have full AC - just a portable unit for the top bedroom. Except for one or two weeks each summer that is enough. Working in the garage isn't much fun though...
On the boat I glued in the port storage area side panel and taped on the inside with 12oz biax. Will need to round over the vertical on the outside before that gets taped. I am tempted to cut a circular hole in these vertical panels (marked) on both sides of the boat and add a fixed port-light (polycarbonate) so there is some ambient light in there. Inside that side is pretty much done now, although I may add one or two narrow shelves to store salt/pepper/spices etc. Otherwise it just needs more sanding/primer/paint. On the starboard side I glued in the shelves and front of the area where plates/cups will be stored.
Below those areas is where our feet will be when sleeping. I added two vertical pieces on each side, to assist with storage down there. Holes drilled so we can attach bungee net if needed.
I've also been working on the fore-cabin hatch framing. I'll glue in the first piece tomorrow and post photos when it is a bit more complete.
Cheers,
Mick

Re: VG23 New Build
Fitted the framing for the fore-hatch and all is good. A few millimetres each side to allow for glassing of the beams. Each beam made from two pieces of 3"x1" mahogany, epoxied together and then rounded. The fore-aft hatch beams are housed and glued in bulkheads B and C and elevated above the deck to provide a straight/square surface for the hatch to sit on. When the deck is on, the hatch will be through-bolted to the beams and the beams glassed to the deck. I toyed with the idea of making my own fore-hatch, as I really am aiming to make as much of the boat myself as I can. But can't do everything. This hatch (Magnus-Vetus) looks/feels good and solid and is the same manufacturer as recommended in the plans. I will need to cut the deck pieces to accommodate the hatch, mast-step, and the companionway hatch at some point.
Photos aren't great, but it will become more clear as the build progresses. Hard to take good photos with such limited space in which to work.
Today I also glued in the starboard side of the storage area and will round and tape that tomorrow. I also did some priming/painting in the storage areas. I simply sanded these without fairing, prior to primer/paint, as the surfaces are practically hidden from the cabin. For the rest of the cabin I'll be fairing and sanding as I go. My plan for the rest of the week is to work on that.
Feeling very happy, as I see the boat become a tiny bit more "built", at the end of every day. I still spend hours simply stood at the transom looking and thinking of the build-stages still to come, but I think I'm far enough on now to know that the boat will be finished. Sooner, rather than later, I hope!!

Re: VG23 New Build
Nice progress Mick!!! Jeff
Re: VG23 New Build
Glued and taped and glassed both port and starboard storage areas on the outside now. 12 oz biax for the edges then 6oz cloth over the panel. I've also cut a circular hole in the port side to allow in ambient light, and ordered more polycarbonate to make port-lights to go over the holes.
Inside I've added two narrow shelves to port for spices/salt/pepper. To starboard I rounded over the chart-plotter cutout and taped over part of the edges. I've also made a vertical storage area for charts, etc.. It isn't yet fitted. Also shown there is the holder for the chart-plotter monitor, which also isn't fitted.
Over the weekend and next week I'll work on fairing+primer+paint in the rest of these areas, and also the same in the main cabin.
