xf 20 recommended motor question
I have a question regarding the xf20. In the plans it says a 25 and 35 hp motors are plenty enough power to moe it in the sample plans. But is that still big enough for the sole version of the boat. I have a 40hp on hand, and if I knew that motor would work for this boat. I would be ready to start building sooner as opposed to saving up more money to get to the plans and motor both for this build. What would you all that have built this boat think? It seems like most of the builds with photos utilized a much larger motor than a 40hp.

Re: xf 20 recommended motor question
May be someone with a xf or Tom will see the post and respond , but I'll put in my 2 cents . PPI is 413 lbs , I think worst case you would be at the low end of the power required and might have to leave one friend at the dock . Most builders want more power than required and pass on the low end hp aspect of a design , some / most are over built and heaver than designed , not sure you can build to designed weight . From memory I think if you were to scale 10% on a build power would need to be increased by 20% , vol would be increased by 30% , so you would go from a low end 25hp to a low end 30hp xf scaled 10% . I don't think adding a sole will put you over the weight of what a 10% scaled version would need for power . I would be good with a 40hp and except from the get go that that I don't have a bullet bass boat . Your build would be as per designed and intended by J , you will be able to run skinny water and catch fish .

It just so happens that I ran the numbers on the XF20 for Mr. Paul and his 40HP motor. The numbers showed a top speed in the mid-30's. The prop size came out as 10 x 11 4-blade. Tom

Not sure about this! My boat is based on a Mangusta 20 hull that I upscaled 10%. The hull as designed had a maximum recommended hp of 250, and that's what I have on my boat. My boat, while propped for power rather than speed, will still top out at around 60 mph - which seems more than fast enough for a 22' boat!rick berrey wrote: ↑Tue Oct 22, 2024 7:38 am From memory I think if you were to scale 10% on a build power would need to be increased by 20% , vol would be increased by 30% , so you would go from a low end 25hp to a low end 30hp xf scaled 10% .

Tom, add 1000 pounds of gear, beer, and buddies and run the numbers again just for fun.
Re: xf 20 recommended motor question
fallguy took it up to 2000lbs for 3 guys plus extra gear and beer and it slowed it down to 28.6mph but that is putting 6 men in the boat designed for 3 fishermen. Tom

Thanks Tom and everyone.
Those numbers sound more than adequate for my needs.
Thank you so much.
I should hopefully have enought to get started around the new year!
