Re: PG 25, July 2017, PangaRon
Question for pangaron and anyone who has successfully completed and water tested the 25.
I’m interested in building the 25 panga, have purchased the plans and am in the process of building a large bow shed on my property to fit the build over the next 2 years. I read though this thread and a few things worry me. The lack of a self bailing deck is a bit concerning, I’m used to fishing a 3 pc hull that is bone dry and incredibly self bailing with almost zero water in the bilge even in rough seas.
I’m looking to build a panga for several reasons
It’s an incredible design and has lots of versatility
It’s an affordable 25 ft boat however the beam is narrow
Fuel efficient
Good range
Easy to trailer and fish solo
And fits a lot of my needs for inshore offshore fishing
I’m located in the north east and fish sounds and ocean.
I like the ride capability as it does well in 2ft chop at speed.
All of my information regarding the 25 comes from talking to owners with true panga design hulls popped from the original Yamaha molds. They are not cheap but exclusively all fiberglass with huge ribs. The transom’s can take massive HP and the have the ability to run very fast in calm waters
The reason I wanted to build my own are bc I like projects and I can make it my own and do realize I’m not saving much but the experience is what I’m seeking
I am conflicted since I would like to hang a 140-150hp motor on the transom. The only option I see here is the Suzuki df140 at 410lbs. It’s a weak 140hp and based off the 115 motor with small changes however makes the power in higher RPM range. It has a larger lower unit gear ratio and can turn larger props. Many benefits
I would like the panga 25 to achieve speeds of at least 40mph on calm days as I boat in the sound and it can be glass calm.
The one consideration is raising the deck and stringers as mentioned here. I would like the largest fuel cell I can fit so I can have range 50gal would give me all the range I could ever need.
The 20-22 are sweet but too small. I want a big hull that can take inlets and true ocean swell and chop within reason. I don’t want an underpowered hull that’s a bathtub at rest. Any information or input is much appreciated. I’d rather know the facts before I waste a lot of time and effort to find out that the design is not for me etc
Thank you

Please start a new thread. The Panga is known to be a bit of an issue for getting wet. PR has discussed wearing boots to fish.Longislandfish wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 12:26 pm Question for pangaron and anyone who has successfully completed and water tested the 25.

When you raise the sole of a narrow boat; the vcg rises and you can end up with a boat that will rock more abeam as all weights are higher; save perhaps the fuel.
After reading your post, it sounds like the Panga may not be the best boat for you.

Re: PG 25, July 2017, PangaRon
Just interesting how the smaller pangas built here have no issues of self bailing or standing water while on the drift. I really want a panga. I know of the all glass hulls hanging 200hp motors on the transom and seeing speeds over 50mph. That maybe bc they are planning hulls not semi displacement hulls. Max hull speed may be limited by the bottom of the hulls designed. I understand they aren’t built for speed but can move at a good rate. I have hit 45mph in a 28 eduardono over chop and it ate it for breakfast incredibly dry and smooth ride, handled like a motocross bike, you can lay that hull on the rails and spin a 180 like nothing. Pangas are way underrated in the states no question a remarkable design by Yamaha

If it were me I would raise the deck as much as needed and move on. Over the years I have seen lots of builders who said they wished they has raised the deck. Still waiting on one to say they wished the deck was lower. But this is just my opinion

I personally wouldn't care much if my deck was lower. My scupper solution (elephant trunks out the back in the bilge) does not require the deck to be above the waterline.
