Bad luck. Well, at least you know that the hull is watertight...

Seems we've all had our share of bad luck lately. Feel your pain. It can all be fixed though.

Carry on and carry forward. Never quit!

Thanks everyone for the kind words of support.

A couple of photos of the consequences of the boiler leak below. I'd removed quite a bit of water by the time I took the photo. Water went onto the foredeck, down through the deck holes for the stanchions and then filled the two small compartments. When they overflowed it started to fill the ice-box compartment. I'll leave the ceiling open to dry out a few more days before dealing with it. Plus will need to buy plasterboard and pipe-lagging - at least it will be easier with the boat outside for a few days.

I spent yesterday fully dismantling the old basket and building a new trolley (8 wheels rather than 4) to move the boat on. Today I bolted together the turn-over frame. We're ready to turn now - tomorrow I'll screw some 4x2 cross-braces onto the 4x4s to stop lateral movement during the turn. Oh, and remove all my tools from the boat too :-) Then move the boat outside....slowly, and test out the block/tackle arrangements for pulling it over. By the end of the day, I hope to have the boat outside, on the driveway, off the wheels, and ready to turn. The turn is now on for Saturday AM. Forecast is rain/sleet and possible snow. Of course.

Photos to follow. Fingers crossed.

Mick

First day of the turn. Started off in sleet but it warmed up eventually. Managed to get the boat to the bottom of the driveway, and in position in one piece - six hours in total. It took most of the day and mostly my fault. I scrimped on the trolley wheel bolts by only using two bolts on each to save a bit of time (eight wheels is SURELY enough...no need to use all the bolts...it will only be on there for 10 minutes), but paid the price. Boat wouldn't move easily and got stuck with the wheels in one direction, when we were pulling in the other, and we were up/down the driveway a few times. So ended up jacking up, re-bolting all the wheels with four bolts, and that made the entire process a lot easier. Just me and the missus. Used the main-sheet and kicker block/tackles, along with the mooring lines at various stages.

It is off the wheels now and ready to turn. Tomorrow we'll pull it back up/over towards the garage.

For the first time seeing the boat from all angles, she looks fine. Slight bit of non-symmetry at the bow with flare not looking perfectly symmetrical port/starboard - annoying, but one thing that was impossible to view given the lack of space during the build. But we're happy. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Mick

Bow looks good to me , the sailboat my uncle built had a bow with a 6' curve top to bottom , could't sand it out , it still sailed . A beer keg would help with the flip , the larger the better , keep it full until the boat is flipped and back inside .

Great progress and the hull looks beautiful !

Just a question, the top of your braces does not follow the deck curve, which may result in significant pressure points where the deck will rest when flipped, is there a risk for the deck strength ? But maybe you have other plans to support the boat when flipped.

Well well well. Happy days.

Rick/Olivier, thanks chaps - yes, the hull looks very nice. I was probably being a bit too critical yesterday. I'm happy now. The boat is at 90 degrees after a full day. Good point about pressure points on the deck. I did put additional blocks/wedges under the bracing so there is more support when the boat is sitting upside down. They aren't held very secure, but they do the job I hope. That part of the deck is supported very securely by the bulkheads and framing inside the boat.

The driveway is at a horrible slope, back to front, and side to side. That was the major annoyance. So another day of moving the jacks slowly, then blocks under the boat, then repeat. Again just me and the missus for most of it. Didn't want the boat falling off the jacks/blocks and sliding anywhere. Big, heavy, dangerous object. It took a long time to get close to the pivot point. At that point, a couple of friends came to help with the final pull as it was too much for the two of us, without a bit more muscle. Three of us to pull over and the fourth to hold a further line to stop any possibility of it rolling further! In the end it came down pretty slow.

Thought about doing the final turn this evening, but no need to rush. Gave the lines a tug and it did feel like it will be a lot easier than the first 90 degrees, with weight up high now, Tomorrow I'll park the Jeep at the bottom of the drive so we can have an additional line from the frame down to the tow point on the jeep. That way we should be able to lower a bit slower dtill.

All in all a successful day. By this time tomorrow I hope the boat is upside down, in one piece, and ready to put back in the garage.

Cheers,

Mick
