The meranti and epoxy kit have arrived

Side panels.....nice day to do it outside!!

Image
I finally found some use for my weights!!

Image
What a nice shape......I am getting addicted to building this boat. :D

As you can see, I dont even need zipties to keep the gaps. It took alot of adjusting and zipties to get it like this.

The even the gaps along the chine show you did a great job on cutting you panels. :!:

What did you use to cut them with? I was planning on using a 7 1/4" circular but everyone else seems to like those 5 1/2" jobbies. Dare I say it.......I may need a new tool.

Furture Discussion:

Wife: Why do you need another saw?
Me: Because it easier for this specific job
Wife: Why its just smaller. Does it cut slanty ways like the big one?
Me: Yes.
Wife: So its the same thing just smaller?
Me: Yes
Wife: How much are they
Me: Couple hundred bucks
Wife: I dont think we can afford that. This boat building is getting annoying. You are taking up have the driveway and almost all the garage. I got to move jugs, cans, tools, trash and god knows whatever else just to do a load of laundry.
Me: But I also need for that new bookcase you have been wanting me to build you.
Wife: Do they have them at Home Depot?
Me: YEP!

Ya, what kdog said, really nice looking laminations!

Make sure you follow the designer's scantlings - probably just my eyes, but it looked like you only used one layer of tape on the stem or if there's more than one, then they weren't offset by much. Not a huge deal. If memory serves, it's three layers on the inside which my good wife pointed out to me right after I declared my inside taping done after two

Lucky,

You were right. Great catch....I was able to correct that before I started laying cloth on the other half of the hull. Thanks

Awesome looking job! I highly recommend to anyone doing a big layup to have a helper mixer. It really makes things go so much smoother. Now comes fairing.....

followed by a wee bit more ...

you got it - SANDING!

that's why they call me the prophet...

To ease the pain, try to make sure you do the following -
Always protect your skin and airways from epoxy dust. Nasty stuff, especially when green. Gloves and Mask at minimum. Be careful with your little ones, once you develop epoxy sensitivity, it stays for life.
Only buy quality sandpapers. It's worth it in the end.
Recognize the difference between sanding and fairing. Sand for a desired surface finish, fair for shape only.
Use appropriate grit for the task at hand. I've seen poor souls here who fair with 120 grit. At the end, I was using 30 grit for fairing.
Use a scraper where appropriate. Much easier and way cleaner than sanding. good for built up epoxy, ridges, and runs.
Get a good orbital sander - no one ever regrets buying quality. I love my 6" Porter Cable.

Persevere, you will get done. If you find you're getting frustrated or despondent, just put it away for a few days, read the forum to get motivated. If you're saying to yourself "There must be an easier way", there probably is. Ask the guys here, we've all been through it. This is the stage of build where you determine the comments at the boat launch "You made this? Really? It's looks like it came out of a mold! Awesome job!"

Yup - it's great stuff, costs a little more but my time and frustration is worth something too :D

A little tip for the the future - if you do a quick sanding while the epoxy is still green, you can knock down the selvage (the threads binding the biaxial strands together). That will save a lot of QuickFair. I can tell you didn't because the lines showing in your glass run parallel to the keel instead of 45°. Just take care not to damage the glass. And remember - at this point, you're not sanding, you're fairing. The goal is fair panels and covering all the glass with fairing compound. The only abrasive touching the hull as this stage should be attached to a long board otherwise you'll just end up following the existing contours wasting time and materials. Keep a long straight edge handy, keep laying it against the hull sides and bottom to look for high spots, hollows, rocker and hooks. The most critical surface on your boat is the last 5-6 feet of the bottom to the transom. You should see QuickFair building up on both sides of the original panel splices and beside the corner tapings.

You're doing great. Before you know it, you'll be splashing primer. That's when sanding serious starts.

So should I sand down the threads binding the biaxial strands together(selvage) before I continue to fair? I want to make this as painless as possible!!!

Thanks,
Will

If you can Will where you don't have any QF and havn't put any fairing material. It will go easier for you as you go along. Looking at it you have already filled in between the salvage and it won't be worth your time.

Fairing is torture, but well worth it. I spent more than 120 hours fairing my hull, lost a few pounds and gave my cardio vascular system a real treat  All well worth it. I agree with LL. Use only a long fairing board (torture board) keep filling the lows and wearing down the highs, and your best friend is a good straight edge about four foot long.

Just keep going till it is perfect.

My fairing tools

My trusty straight edge, I use this thing all the time, it is very handy for all sorts of jobs, but really good for checking fairness especially when rested on one of its corners.

Ok, I'm back working on the boat again. Ended up getting a divorce and had to put the OB in storage for a while, can't do much work on her in an apartment. I should have the reverse chines completed this weekend and the rest of the fairing completed in the next few weeks then prime, paint and flip!!

Typically the biax tape is for structural elements - chines, keel, frames. The woven tape is usually used topsides, cabins, consoles, seatboxes...

Finished the bottom over the weekend, couldn't get the bottom to look smooth so I sanded the little bubbles out of the graphite:

I decided to try something new and I mixed some blue pigment with epoxy and put 2 coats over the 3 coats of epoxy graphite....it has a really funky black-blueish tint to it. I like it!!

Everybody was busy until next weekend to help me flip so I found a 2x6 in the ceiling and screwed an eyebolt to it and attached a ratchet strap to the bow eye and flipped her my self. I inflated two camping mattresses, ratcheted the bow up some, grabbed the back and put her on her side:

Then I just let her slide right on down on the mattresses....worked like a champ!!!

I still have the transom to glass and I'm sure I will have some air pockets that I will have to grind out. Keel got 3 layers and chine got 2 layers. Plus the whole bottom.....I will be patching the sides with some left over glass so the entire inside will be glassed.

If it's non-structural and small spots, just grind them out and fill them. Wood flour and epoxy will do it.

I'll post pictures this weekend if I can ever find my camera after the move....lol

Nice work! I remember this phase, it's nice to be NOT be sanding, cleating, or tabbing for a change isn't it?

Enjoy, as soon as the sole is down and sealed, you're in the home stretch.

I'm shooting to have the boat completed by May 15th, just got the motor and trailer registered today. I installed the soles to the Aft lockers and glassed 75% of the sole over the weekend. Plan on installing the fuel tank and getting most of the framing done on the casting deck tonight.
I talked to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety yesterday and got everything in line to have her inspected. They were very helpful!! :D I've got an agressive schedule planned to get her finished by Memorial Day weekend. :!: :!:

Thanks Steven!!

The tank is a 30 gal, I do have a vent but it hasnt been installed yet. It will go here:

I picked up a white plastic louvered vent from West, I think it's 4"x6". It will also provide me some maintenance access should I ever have to get back in there.......

Will, just for the record, CG requirements call for 2 vents in that compartment. One in the top 1/3 and one in the bottom 1/3. Fuel fumes are heavy and sink to the bottom, and plastic tanks are gassy. They need a flow of air.
I picked up a white plastic louvered vent from West,
Do yourself a favor and use stainless now. You will be replacing them in a year otherwise. The sun will rot them or someone will stick a foot thru them before long.

My tank is in the same place yours. You can see the upper vent on the starboard side of Capt. Sam..

The lower vent on the port side of Capt. Sam..

He said he was inspecting 4 more today, its 4pm now!! There are only two guys in the state that inspect boats for HIN's, a lot of the boats are pond boats or boats that were built by someone's grandfather that were never registered. He said that they inspected 40 boats last year that were stolen and trying to be passed off as homemade. Most of the boats that get inspected are crap....not even fit for the wood pile...

:help: I put my first coat of Sterling on and it looks like total crap!!! :help:
I'm guessing I laid it on too thick...so my plan is sand everything with 120 then 320 and paint another coat very thin. Any tricks would really be helpful!!! :help:

The paint went on smooth but ran and looked like waves, so basically I used some really expensive paint as primer!!!

Re: OB17 Build in Oklahoma

Posted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 9:33 pm
by Cracker Larry
That is a very thin paint. You have to thin it even thinner, roll it on even thinner, then tip it thinner. In hot weather you have to add thinner to the paint every few minutes, and dip your tipping brush in thinner and wipe it off. Roll on a very small amount, no more than 2 linear feet or so, tip that, and keep moving with a wet edge. Roll it on thin, tip it out thinner, never go back and try to pick up a run.

I suck at painting too, but you'll get it with a little practice. Thin coats are the key. Very thin.

Wishing you luck :!: It took me a few coats to figure it out. Apply it as thin as you possibly can. I ended up cutting my 8" rollers in half because it put on too much paint. Roll it in one direction, tip it in the other, keep moving and never go back. Sterling is a weird paint in that it shrinks and evens out as it dries.

Re: OB17 Build in Oklahoma

Posted: Tue Jul 02, 2013 1:49 pm
by Dougster
CLarry's advice helped me. I struggled with it but did it in cooler weather, which may have helped keep it thin. I had good luck with the cut in half rollers and the thinning mix recommended in the tutorial (was it 2:1:1  ). That first coat needs to look bad because it's so thin it doesn't cover real well. Like Mad Dog says, we're pulling for you.

Says you'll get it Dougster

Todays coats went on much better, I put it on a little thick to start off with but soon got the hang of it. I'll take pictures after I get the next coat on.

Now tomorrow before I put the next coat on I am planning to hit the drips/runs with my orbital...is that a good idea? If not what is the best way to tackle the drips/runs?

I went after teh drips/runs with the orbital and 220 grit between build coats, 320 before the final coat. No sanding marks in the final coat.

I decided to push the boat back into the garage so the wind wouldn't blow crap into the paint but left the hatches sitting out in the sun to bake/dry. Went inside to cook dinner for my kids and 45 minutes later opened up the front door and it was pouring outside. All over my freshly painted hatches....thank goodness I decided to push the boat into the garage!!!

Thanks Mike, the pictures hide the flaws. It looks great from 10 feet... We had a zero% chance for rain...then BAM!! pored for 20 minutes 8O

I don't care any more, one more thin coat on tomorrow then sand the jacked up hatches and coat them again......then I'm done!! Don't care what it looks like!! I need to get some blood on the decks soon!!!

I'm very frustrated with the Sterling paint. It looks like crap, I know it's operator error. So I'm going to scrap the whole Sterling paint idea, I have used almost a gallon of paint(I have about 12oz of paint left). Any recommendations of an easier paint to use?

Re: OB17 Build in Oklahoma

Posted: Sat Jul 06, 2013 2:24 pm
by bigtalljv
Hang in there I found my Sterling application to be problematic too. Like everything else on the boat it's the first time I ever did it. My mantra these days seems to be, "this would be easier the second time". I, unfortunately, just lowered my expectations and things got a lot less stressful and I got it done, with specs of something I could never eliminate. I don't have a show quality finish either. My next boat that I rebuild (never!) will look better.

It's tough to practice at a few hundred bucks a gallon. I found if I thinned any more than 2:1:1 it just wouldn't cover. 3-4 coats later and I could still see primer shadows underneath.

I also had better results like you with disposable brushes.

I don't have enough paint left to finish the boat so I said "screw it"!! I just ordered a gallon of System Three Orcas White. I'm going to sand all the gloss off the Sterling paint and cover it with the System Three.

Bill, I would have needed at least another half gallon. Can't afford the expensive stuff right now so I bought a gallon of System Three. I still needed to paint the lockers and deck.

Just a little set back!! I'll have the new paint by Thursday and on the boat by the end of next weekend. I'm going to spray it this time.

There have been allot of documented cases on here about S3 paint peeling off. If you are going to spray, I would just go with an automotive acrylic urethane from an auto-body supply shop. It can be had at a reasonable price.

Posted: Mon Jul 08, 2013 9:38 am
by Cracker Larry
There is no way I'd ever use S3 paint again. It doesn't hold up very well at all in the southern sun. Mine is peeling off, flaking off, cracking off....you'd be better off with porch paint

2 other good alternatives in the same price range are Petit Easypoxy and Interlux Brightsides.

I've used both interlux brighstides, and interlux perfection.
brightsides is 1-part LPU
perfection is 2-part LPU.
They both go on great, I THINK perfection will last longer, but I don't know. Perfection has a bubbling problem if it sits under water (ie small areas near drain holes) permanantly. It is lasting great on the underside of the hull when the boat spends most it's time on a trailer or lift.

I just ordered Interlux Brightside with a quart of Interlux 333 brushing liquid. The Interlux with brushing liquid is even cheaper than the System Three. My boat will be trailered and stored in the garage, the longest it will ever be in the water is 3- 5 days.

OK, I cancelled it!
Good choice 8)

I've had very good success with Petit Easypoxy and Interlux Brightside. Easypoxy is my go to, middle-of the road paint. Almost foolproof roll and tip, has a good gloss, holds up good. Brightside is very similar, but I tend to stick with one brand when it works.

I have the first coat of Interlux Brightside on:
Image

This paint is very easy to use, it's a one part paint and I thinned it with Interlux 333. I poured 12oz into a paint cup and added 1oz of thinner. It covered both sides of the hull and the transom and I had 4oz left over!! I'm going to let it set for a few hours then wipe down the inside and get a coat in there. More pictures to follow soon!! :D

Bill, I was using the expensive badger hair brushes and the yellow West rollers. But I switched to the Lowe's white foam rollers and $8 square 2'' latex brush today and it looks great. The paint is very easy to use, the only thing you have to add in is the brushing thinner. You do have to sand/scuff between coats and it takes 2 weeks to completely cure.

I would recommend this paint to learn how to roll and tip, it is so easy to use. If it lasts a few years I will be happy!!

Will, Hope mine is half as nice.

How much foam did you use under the sole. I think I read 4 gallons for the OB 17.

Thanks, JMM

Nice boat, congratulations.

About the foam: you don't have to fill the spaces. As long as you have enough buoyancy: each 2 gallon kit provides about 500 lbs buoyancy. No problem with 7 gallons, it gives you a large safety margin.

At least you've been building for 4 years.....Mine just sat in my dad's barn until I finished my 3 year stent in D.C. Now that I'm back, SWMBO has a honey do list that's 4 pages long....12font single spaced :help:

Not long now though. I'm hoping to get back on mine by the end of the month.......Hopefully

Congrats again!

Will, she looks great!

How did you achieve the flat transom and decks? Did you just cut out the camber or did you raise the shear like SideSlippa did on his OB17? Thanks!

I just cut it until I liked the shape. Sorry that's not much help is it....lol

OK, successful launch yesterday!! Found some things that I forgot about and some problems that will require troubleshooting: 1) I forgot about the speedo pitot tube and never ran the hose or installed the pitot... 2) I bought a baitwell/washdown pump kit.....they both turn on but don't flow water. 3) Bilge pump in auto mode only turns on for a few seconds every few minutes....pumps fine in manual mode.

I'm running an aluminum 13 7/8" x 19 pitch prop, at 4500 RPM I'm pushing 43mph (according to my Sea Tow app).

Check your motor it's possible you can run the tube directly into your motor so you don't need a pitot

Good point Peter. I've looked but can't seem to find where it might hook up. Does anyone know where the speedo might hook into a 2006 Johnson 90hp?

It almost certainly has a speed pickup on the engine. Look just above the gear case housing on the front of the engine leg. There should be a piece of 1/4" rubber tubing sticking up several inches with a plug in the end of it. They really aren't very accurate though, and at best can only give you speed through the water. For navigation purposes speed over the ground is what's important. GPS has about made speedometers obsolete.

how's the HD-7 so far? I was thinking about a gen2 9-touch. Not sure what is going to be "big enough". I'm looking at it more for GPS and radar and diving site locating, not so much fishing.

The boat looks awesome.

Fishing was pretty bad, lots of rain and fresh water. Caught about 7 Redfish but they were all 16 or 17 inches....beautiful blue tails though. And 2 short Speckled Trout.....lots of sun and clear water at the islands though!!

Will,
Glad you are enjoying the fruits of all your labor. 43 mph is sweet. We aren't in a race with the fish, just trying to catch them.

If and when I finish mine I have a 70 HP Force. hoping for high 30's.

I think I have about $10K in her now, that's totally outfitted.....Lowrance GPS, Clarion waterproof radio, VHF, gauges, trolling motor, washdown, 2 Yeti coolers, leaning post, craigslist trailer....

I'm going to have a custom aluminum trailer built this winter that will be around $2,500

I got tired of spending $125 every few months for a new radio so I bought the Clarion CMD8 waterproof marine radio. And boy am I happy, I installed it just before I went on my first fishing trip to the gulf in May. This is a really neat radio, no cover is required but it is kinda bulky. I would highly recommend this radio, it has been caught in several rainstorms, drenched in saltwater and I haven't had an issue with it.

Don't be cheap with a your stereo, I went through 3 radios in 1 1/2 years....I would have saved a lot of time and money if I would have bought a quality product in the first place.
