Dimitris´ scaled VG18

Here we are again.

There is no VG18 yet but just a model, but the project have officially started.

At the beginning of summer I acquired the VG18 plans, in metric dimensions of course, and scaled up everything 10%. I cut the panels in 1:10 scale using the scaled dimensions, to check the calculations and I had a hull :)

Then I started to deviate from the plans a little bit.

This is modified internal structure of the scaled model. The modifications are: 1) One extra bulkhead at the chainplates position. This bulkhead proved the main lateral support for the CB case. 2) The remaining bulkheads up to the end of the cockpit have all been shifted aft proportionaly. The cabin bulkhead has been shifted about 20 cm.
The model does not show the ring frame between the cabin and the chainplates bulkheads. In total, 3 bulkeahds will support the CB case and 4 bulkheads the keel.

Under the model is my piano. Last year I decided to pursue my old dream of learning to play. It consumes a lot of boatbuilding time, but it´s well worth it.

Two more views.

Window style is also altered, following the VG23.

Cockpit length remains about 1.80 meters. The backrests are missing. I am not sure how useful they are. Opinions are welcome.

I developed a new nesting plan for the scaled VG18. I will need 2 more 10mm sheets and 1 more 6mm sheet of plywood. In wood volume that´s exactly 10% more, which is a very good value, considering that the scaled VG18 will have 21% more surface.

Now sawdust as yet.

You need a frame under the cockpit seats.

Great job on the model. I too have just started my model of the CV 16. I should be done very soon and start building the CV 16. I will be posting my progress in the forum.

I'm confused. VG 18 + 10% = VG 20. Why bother?

Most important, the cockpit is smaller, you cannot sleep on the cockpit in a VG20. The scaled VG18, even with the cabin bulkhed shifted aft 25 cm will have 1.80 m (=6 feet) long benches.

Also, I do not like the look of the VG20.

Finally, the scaled VG18 is a bigger boat than the VG20, it has a longer waterline, 5.95 vs 5.25 m. Remember, VG20 is an 18 feet long boat, with the added skirt.

I have yet to find a source for BS1088 okume :(

Hi Dimitris,

I am from Bulgaria, but currently live in Canada.
At another forum I found this discussion about marine plywood in your area:

Hope that helps!
