Got some painting done thought I'd let someone see the results so far. It still has two more coats of the epoxy paint, And three clear coats.I'd estimate about 10 hrs and another five hrs to frame it up to roll.I have a delema. I was going to speckle paint the inside, but with only two coats of this stuff I'm starting to reconcider? On one hand I think it would add depth and contrast for the parts to stand out but it's turning out to be better faired and filled than I expected, really. I would like some thoughts on this.Anyway, still some building left to do, such as the console is getting two tackle boxes.Hope the pics inspirs or what ever we are surposed to be doing on this website. All I know is that it's fun :D

EvilD, It is looking awesome. I agree from the pictures it seems to be faired very well. I would not do the speckle paint, but instead would use some non-skid powder in the paint. It just seems to look better finished and more classy that way.

The last picture with the hatch open has a round hatch inside, what is that??

GREAT JOB

One more question guys,

Does anyone think a swing backrest would get in the way, or should I leave it as is?I've never owned or used one like that! This thing is getting a T top also, of my design and construction. It's going to be awesome. That is if I don't go broke first!.Evild

Forget it! I'm not even going to loose sleep about making anything on the interior smooth! I'm painting it w/Benjamin Moore Industrial Enamel paint (as my console) and I'm sure it'll look just dandy enough for fishing.

The last few weeks I've looked at 'commercial' recreational boats..and I haven't seen one where you can say that whoever made them spent any time at all making things on the interior surface 'smooth'.

I've experimented with the console as to getting things smooth. It looks smooth alright - it passes the 8' test...but up close you can definetly see the uneven fairing job I did.

Considering that...I don't even know if I'll have the patience to do a 'picture perfect' job on my hull ...heheheh ;) I'm going to try to paint thickened epoxy with some microballoon/silica mix into the 4oz FG glass weave using a foam roller. Do maybe two coats of that and then sand using a 400 grit or so paper. I'll then paint it with Benjamin Moore enamel paint. I've got an enclosed big garage and a compressor w/a gun set up to spray paint. I'll put two or three coats of that on..and then let dry. End of story. Anything that looks uneven...I'm leaving that for the fish to worry about. :P

..but then again... I don't know if a planter needs to be done with so much diligence. The flowerbed will cover up any paint job anyways. ;)

Great pics,

About the swing post, we have Boston whalers at camp that have a post that will lock into the forward position. I like that. We have a Carolina Skiff that does not lock, I HATE that.

I plan to get a swing post that locks into position. It doesn't seem to get in the way fishing but (I am afraid to admit this) fishing is not a priority for me.

Enjoy your work, Brent

Doc you may be surprised by this and hang on to your seat,my interior is not by any means faired, perfect, or even close to what you think. You can see the tape lines, there pit holes, there are rough edges in the corners.Chill man! It's is exactly the way it is going to stay except for finish painting. If people have dispairing remarks about my work I come back with, "Cool, let me see some pics of the boat you have built lately". Then of course I tell them to P*ss OFF! I'm building this thing for ME.Not my wife, not my children and damn sure not my niegbors.

You've done well! Build on Dude, LIFE IS GOOD, LETS LIVE IT 8)

Looks good.

Paint question: we have the same dilemma. We are building a little boat in our warehouse under the office to test new materials and methods.
Despite my previous tests, what surprised me was the QuickFair.
That stuff is great: in one pass we got rid of all the tape edges and were ready to prime after only 2 hours of sanding inside and outside. That is amazing for a 12' boat.
We aim for a boat show finish but thought of trying some textured paint inside. However, it looks so smooth that we hesitate.
We will probably go for a smooth finish.
On the outside, we were ready for the LPU with only one sanding at 150 grit. We may go for 300 before the LPU then 2 coats with wet sanding at 600 in between and finish with a clear coat.
We should be ready by the end of next week and will post pictures of the whole fairing and painting process.

Flip-flop seat bench? I think the boat is too small.

PS: Evildwarf: did you check the Marine Connection on US1? They have a bunch of surplus swing backrest benches.

Thanks Jacque,

I did check there for the seat but They wanted to much. I've finished mine and have only $127.00 bucks in it verses $289.

I'd like to check out the quick fair sometime, but I used mricro/cabacil mix 50/50, and my sanding experience was about the same. But, it is a real pain to mix!!!

I know what you mean about the paint thing, but I've decided to go with the speckled effect in that I pushed the boat out of the garage and the reflection from the inside is blinding.Hoping the speckled finish isn't so harsh on the eyes.

Love to see your shop, sometime maybe I could drop by?Evild.

Evil D,
The pic's look great and I feel the same way about my interior. It's a fishing boat and I just want to get it finished so I can use it.

EvilD,
What size fuel tank did you end up using. Did you put it in the console or the under the front deck?

The boat is looking sweet! ... post more pics!

Right now, it is small, just a bay under our office but we move in December and will have around 3,000 sq.ft.!

EvDw,

That glare is one big reason I did the light green sponge paint on the C19. It cured the problem. I was absolutely blinded with just the white. Believe me you have the right attitude on the inside. I really fretted about it but now the inside looks great. Once you quit looking for those small irregularities and flaws you can't even find them anymore! If you're keeping the boat, they aren't worth worrying about. Unless you are good and fast at all the tricks, (like Chris).

You guys may want to visit ccushions.com. They have a nice selection of cushions that fit on coolers with back rests . They also do custom work. I ordered the square cushions for my phantom with a flap so I can snap them on and off.

Great job EvilD.

I was thinking of building a frame around the cooler to support the backrest. Never thought of attaching the swingback to the cooler itself. Great idea.
