Skoota windshield lines poll

I have had too much time sitting here with mystery illness and wanted to ask you guys a question about the windshield.

The roof has a slope of about 1" every 18" or so. Roughly a 8" drop iirc from the aft to forward edge.

My question is rather simple, but you need the story first.

I plan to install a cage or a windshield/hardtop above the roof because my eyes burn so bad from wind that I can't operate the boat in the evenings is really terrible. And I am in Minnesota and it is so fargin cold here; driving fast in 49 degree weather tends to burn eyes as well and I can heat an enclosure.

The enclosure will run from roughly 2 feet forward of the aft cabin edge and probably about 4 feet or at least 30" aft. That area behind is the bench and standing room at the helm is all. So, the top is about 4.5 to 6 feet longs.

Do I

A) Maintain the same pitch of the roof? This would mean I start the roof 2 feet into the cabin and the aft portion of the rooftop is roughly 3" higher.

or

B) Design the hardtop roof with only a very slight pitch closer to DWL

C) Some alternative like start with A and then chop it down hard at the back so it doesn't look like a spacecraft launchpad

Pros and cons

A

Pros
Looks the same as the roof
Any error in the boats final waterline is not revealed
Cons
Makes the hardtop pitch up really high for only aesthetics
(the roof will be about 9 feet or higher above the cockpit

B
Pros
Is lower at the back, but only by 3-5".
Cons
Could show errors in DWL only correctable by ballasting

Best I got is a link to a file.

Best view of current stuff no windshield.

Also wondering ? 27" head clearance enough for my big fat head?

I like the idea of starting the windshield a couple feet forward of the aft bulkhead. I think it should follow the roof line. One question, is this going to cause any height problem when it comes to moving it down the road?

All has to be removable and demountable.

I just realized if I build it flat, water will run all over the friggin place.

Has to have the sheer of the roof. But I will make it flat; it would be silly to bend it

You should think about drainage a lot. It really sucks to have water either dripping on you or worse coming off all at once and soaking you.

Yeah. I am planning to reduce the helm enclosure so it can warm up better and that means the windshield is helm only. I don't care about the looks (much). But by doing that any rain/spray will blast off the top of the roofdeck and onto the cockpit. For that reason alone, the wider and aesthetically more pleasing, heavier all the way across option would be nicer. But, boats get wet.

We have put some thought into other areas. There is a gap between the hulls and cabin that will waterspout in the shit. To avoid waterspouts, my current plan is to build some filler piece and wrap in black neoprene silencing. But it will really require some ingenuity. Parts like these aren't in the drawings for prototypes. You just know you need them as the build progresses.

Any opinion on my windshield/helm enclosure?

This is a sketch of just the helm at say 42" wide.Going all the way across would be about 98". Lot more cost for the colder enclosure and all I get is one bench covered really.

I like the idea of making a place for another person to sit and visit in comfort with the helmsman. And if a person is a little prone to getting sea sick being there might make much better for them.

That is a double bench.

I like the idea also. Seems that in rough weather or tight channels would be nice to have that person as the outlook/spotter. Besides, are you going to heat the helm station or just the cabin?

I am gonna heat the station, but I am btu output limited to say 5000, so it won't do much in a massive enclosure; probably aim for window defrost and hand heating.

...by the way Ken, thanks for engaging me on this blog, I really appreciate you seeing past politics...I am pretty sick, so it is helpful...I have relatives that won't talk to me over things like claiming Hillary had child sex parties in pizza parlors.

I sure hope you get onboard the Skoota someday.

5000 btu is better than nothing but it aint much. If you were able to get up around 20,000 you will be much happier but I understand sometimes it is not possible.

I am installing a webasto tsl17000 btu heater in the cabin.

There is not much space for a bigger boiler.

I might get closer to 10,000btu outside and that allows 7000 inside, but we also heat water with it as well...so if each shares; closer to 5500. At night the helm heat would be off.

That should be plenty of heat for your needs. I sometimes will do some fishing when it is below 0 and 5000 btu is not enough. I do not think you will be doing much in that sort of temperature.

I know it's not practical in a marine environment but consider, as a back up in the helm station, a Mr. Heater that produces between 4000 and up to 18000 BTU. With it's tilt and O2 cut off it would be great for a small space that is drafty. I got one for my days living in a big travel trailer and now use it tent camping. It has served me well in our cold weather. You know, when it drops below 60 and they shut Houston down to de-ice the roads.

Dan, it's all good on the political end.

Too bad you've only got outboards for power or I would suggest some 12V heated seat pads from ebay (I installed them in my last car and they really warmed you up) They were cheap but effective.

Can you mock it up after the boat is complete? If you were good with a pencil or CAD I'd say draw it first....but green paint program ain't telling the story for me.

I'd say generally that the slope should be less than the roof, it should have camber for sure, and put a lip on the sides you don't want drips/rain water to run off. Decide where the rain should go and then fit a drain hose on the supports.

Are you SURE that she didn't?

OK - more seriously, don't take them seriously and get better soon.

I will have 12v coming back off the engines, so I could run a 12v seat heater while underway.
