Re: Sharkbait PG20
Laid all the glass and used peel ply. Pulled the peel ply and cut off the "skirt". Peel ply is a dream....Learned a lesson. Should've had my wife mix epoxy while I laid the glass. Would've made the process alot faster. I got the whole thing done in about 4 hours. Gonna start on finish work and getting rub rails and spray rail done. Thanks to Jeff and the guys for the fast service getting me the products quickly.

My pleasure. You all are running a great business. I'm driving my dogs down to Florida for our couple month Bahamas trip as soon as they open up. Do you all take visitors? Would love to see your shop.
Re: Sharkbait PG20
Absolutely, we welcome customers, visitors & guests!! Look forward to meeting you!! Jeff

Sorry to hijack your build thread, Sharkbait, but quick pertinent question:FluidDynamic wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:29 pm ...Some people put a coat of epoxy over the micro balloon mixture to help with pin holes in the future....
Anyone ever try Gelmagic for a neat coat instead of raw epoxy? It applies mush easier, no drips, just not sure if it will be as good or if it may be prone to pinhole like the fairing compounds.
Jeff

Sharkbait, question on the peel ply over the biaxial cloth: what was the bottom-line effect, will it save you from needing to sand/fair or was it mainly to remove excess epoxy form the weave? Also, how hard was it getting it applied and smooth over those large surfaces? I played with the stuff once on my last boat when i was still pretty green and really struggled with it, always considering trying again.
Thanks,
jeff

Re: Sharkbait PG20
What I have learned with epoxy is better a little too much than too little. The peelply makes it so my next layer can go on with minimal sanding. I got done with the epoxy and glass on the whole boat using slow hardener. One side was a little slow absorbing because it had already been drying for an hour or so. The other side went down easy. I used a couple of credit cards and me and my wife smoothed it out. I wasn't particularly careful with the side cuts. I made the longer sheet for the bottom and partial sides before laying glass. I think folks probably put too much thought into the peelply. It's not a huge deal if you end up with a couple of bubbles here and there. You just have to lightly sand those spots later. This was my first time with peelply. Definitely a time saver for sanding. It seems to smooth the surface to an even finish also.VT_Jeff wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 1:42 pm Sharkbait, question on the peel ply over the biaxial cloth: what was the bottom-line effect, will it save you from needing to sand/fair or was it mainly to remove excess epoxy form the weave? I’m gonna help with the hijack, just for a minute...VT_Jeff wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 12:47 pmSorry to hijack your build thread, Sharkbait, but quick pertinent question:FluidDynamic wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 11:29 pm ...Some people put a coat of epoxy over the micro balloon mixture to help with pin holes in the future....

My little experience with Gel Magic is that it’s a great adhesive, but much harder to sand than epoxy or the other usual things we like to spread.
Back to you Sharkbait! Glass is looking good!
A guy I know who does boat work professionally is always telling me, “ya gotta use peel ply!” Supposed to be a great time saver.

Re: Sharkbait PG20
It definitely takes longer to apply, but the time it saves in sanding is worth it. I've only used it on filets and biaxial tape.
