A resin rich layup is not ideal. More resin results in poorer laminates. I weigh everything. Even the glass I cut in a basket.

For example....

Weight of cloth. 4 pounds

Weight of resin needed. 4 pounds plus 4 oz for paint roller or zero for squeegee

4 pounds of resin is 4/9 pounds per gallon or 0.444 gallons

56.8 ounces resin, always round up to nearest ratio

For 2:1 resin, 3 parts is 57 ounces. 19 ounces H, 38 ounces R

There can be some table losses to plastic, so now and then I add say 3 ounces more.

There are some strategies to use less resin.

Always, always wet the substrate with about 40% of the total.

Never, never use resin that is below about 70F or you will never have enough because it gets honey-like.

Avoid at all costs wetting down through or wetting up through; the glass will float on resin or the resin will float on the glass.

When using peelply, there is no reason to saturate it, jist lay it on and make it smooth. If you are saturating peelply; you are doing it wrong.

Ask more questions. Something is wrong for 70% wastage or even if you used the wrong glass weight, 30% is vac bag waste rates when resins are purposely pulled.

Outside work should only be done if the environment is warm. The hull upside down, heat under. Hull, rightside up, tent it and use an electric heater..

Fallguy, my question was, has anyone ever measured the weight of fiberglass cloth and compared that weight to the advertised weight of what they purchased. I purchased 12 oz cloth, and it weights 15.75 oz.

I understand the discrepancies. I had variations in cloth of about 5%. But just trying to help you with 30% other waste.

Fallguy, the more I review the numbers and account for putty and faring compound used, I think early on I was using 7% to 12% more than the minimum resin required. Lately (with more experience) It's been under 5%, more like 2% to 3%. I don't think that's too bad for wastage numbers. These wastage numbers include unused resin, what's on the rollers, brush, in tray, etc.

I still don't understand why my 12 oz cloth weighs ~ 16 oz. The numbers above are based on 16 oz cloth.

I was basing my comment on 30% waste after accounting for the fabric.

Fallguy, I do welcome feedback. It took me time, but I think I have a handle on the wastage, it is a lot less than 30% as I stated earlier.

I still don't understand the variations in cloth weight.

Well, biax is snaky. If you push it together or pull on it, the dimensions will grow and shrink. But probably a mill sold it or the reseller sold it wrong.

I’m just guessing here but …

I think the weight is JUST the glass weight. There may be enough binding material to make a difference especially as biax seems to have more “not glass” material.

Two layers of glass on the inside, all sanded ready for the final layer.
