SK14 build PittPlanB

Post by PittPlanB »

I own a larger center console fishing boat but decided to build a solo skiff to enjoy back water solo fishing and the SK 14 was exactly the boat I am looking for. I am spending more time throughout the year in NC and I know this skiff will be a ton of fun! I live in Pittsburgh and was unable to locate the plywood so I ordered the CNC kit and that worked out great as a first time builder. The staff at BBC has been great so far (great customer service)! I will continue to post pictures, progress reports, and any questions I might have as I continue to build. This forum is a great spot to get feedback from experienced builders thanks in advance for your future input. I learned a lot in my research about the skiff boat build process before I decided to buy the SK14 from comments on this forum.

A picture of my younger son at a Pirate baseball game snuck in the pics I selected. My 2 boys are helping with the build and love to fish!

Started stitching the boat together this week. The boat went together surprisingly fast mainly thanks to looking at this forum and comments that others have made to simplify the process as much as possible for a first time builder. Especially making sure there is spacing between the wood pieces I would’ve tightened it down if I would not have seen those comments to keep spacing the nails work very well to add space. I also built a 4 x 8‘ table with large locking caster wheels so I can move the boat in and out of my garage easily as the sanding process starts, built it out of some scrap wood I had from other projects. I got the idea on another posting that said it was a good idea to be able to move a boat build project in and out easily as you build especially for sanding outside. My older son and my brother helped with this part of the project.

I need help and advice from the experts!!! I apparently made a potential fatal mistake for my build using the faring compound instead of the wood flower to glue my joints ant to laminate my transom boat meds together. I received darker product with the white material mixed in and lighter material with my kit. I used the darker material. All of the videos I watched and and photos I looked at during my research over the past few months the glue for joints were very dark and the faring compound used later in builds was very light color. That was an assumption that I hope does not destroy this project causing me to start over. What are my options at this point? Will the joints hold? Can I grind them down or do anything? My inside joints and stringers are all taped up. Outside is not taped up.

It will be fine in an SK14. I would worry if it was a bigger boat like a CS25 but this a light hull and my specs are over kill.
For the fillets, the type of filler is not very important. Normally, we use a putty made from a mix of the two that is why you see the dark color.
In most of my designs, the strength comes from the glass skins. and you did that right.
Keep going.

Thank you for your response. That was my rookie assumption to use the wrong product based on color. I learned my lesson and luckily it was a mistake that can still work without needing to scrap the boat! You and your staff have been great. Building this project boat has been fun so far, and we are looking forward to finishing up the next steps and eventually the project. Fishing on it this fall is the goal!

Can I add wood flower filet on top of the micro bubble filet if needed to fill in some areas to make the contour correct and then sand before I lay down glass tape on outside hull seams or do I need to stick with the same micro bubble filet now (I will need to order more)? Not sure if the different materials will bond.

If the micro ballon mixture is cured, scuff it with 80gr and you should be good. If not cured it should still link. I’d still scuff it with 80 just to be safe.

As a general rule you can get chemical linking with the same brand as long as it is green. If you need we differing brands you’ll need to let the applied layer fully cure (then scuff) before applying the next layer.
