Finally after eight years Penny is launched !
I will post photos later.

Nervous and barely slept the night before but the towing and launch were uneventful afterall. My buddy who towed really helped ! Fun ride.

Observations;
She feels very safe and is a super comfortable ride. The outboard is new and not even broken in yet so i could only go below 2000rpm which is like idling really. I hit the dock three times trying to align :o The wind was strongish as well so next year I may reconfigure our dock for less hassle.
The current arrangement is not for although i may only need more time on her.

When docked she looks to trim high. I have two anchors with rode, tools and gear stowed in the berth area, full 5 gal water tank and had brought additional big water jugs. I will need more ballast or trim thr motor or shift things. The little cruising we did was really a nice ride - very safe feeling about it.

Will get someone to film and take photos to see how she rides. I recall DougN and Chigagoross saying load up and load the front as well.

She looks pretty at the dock... have to do some changes and tweak a few things before next outing.

Good to see another HMD 19 was launched in Oz. Hope everyone is good !

Photos coming up.

Hi Marc. Great news to see that Penny has been launched. I think you'll quite enjoy it. About the bow being a bit high, I did some measurements while I was out last. A friend and myself (about 370# total for us), no water, no additional weight added forward except for about perhaps 30# of tools/parts under the berth, just forward of the helm bulkhead. Using a tilt meter on the berth top, I read 2 deg at idle/2.5 deg at 5 knots/4 deg at 5.8 knots. Did not check trim when not under power. Did not mess with engine trim so that may change things somewhat. All that said I haven't found the trim to be a problem unless you are near full throttle and the combination of the trim increase and the rising stern wave, I sometimes have water coming in the drains in my splashwell. You're going to find this a fun boat. Looking forward to pictures on the water.

Hey all, some launch day photos and first docking :D. I am still breaking in the outboard and getting used to her handling. So far so good and much more comfortable approaching the dock. I am starting to read the wind and current with more confidence taking her in real slow. Planning a short day trip this week.

At full throttle 5000 rpm I topped 6.48 mph with 3 adults and a child. She rides smooth with ease and just plows thru waves with no effort (and fun) but I find she rolls just a bit much although not so scary. This trip will only be two of us so I will play with shifting the 75 lbs of water jug ballast just in front of the cabin by the head and see what she does. The added weight low in the centerline should help or shed weight above...get rid of the door and use vinyl, use thinner lexan windows, maybe remove the cabin roof vent. etc... Also the Monstaliner that I sprayed is on the heavy side having used 5-6 gallons, lots of it on the cabin. Recalling the build, I would have further modified the aft built up frame in the cabin by using only one lamination. Nothing that cannot be remedied tho

HMD19 pilots...what are your thoughts on the roll ?

Looks fantastic Marc. Congratulations! The conditions looked choppy too. That dock looks like you might have to use plenty of bumpers. I have not found that roll is an issue at all. In fact it’s very stable in roll. I do have a very heavy battery under the step down to the toilet and water tanks under the sole. You bow looks high like all the rest of the hmd19’s. I have just purchased a V shaped bladder tank for the bow and a pump. I’ll let you know how it goes. It’s 55litres.
Congratulations again Marc and enjoy.

Thanks guys !

Not a bad feeling is right !!

Graham, I should have been more specific - she rolled quite a bit taking a direct side boat wake from a bit too close. I expected some rolling but it seemed excessive. When people are in the cockpit I make sure to not all go on one side. To me, it should be stiffer in the water (i.e. lower CG). I will see with the weight shift. Your build is ideal with the large tanks below deck and the batteries. Available water ballast is 34 litres plus the fresh water tank 18 litres already filled (and the head - say 4 litres). Worst case is I fill the void space under deck around the water tank and transducer with heavy chain.

I do not have enough of a feel yet but am trying to find best performance by trimming the outboard, just playing around. A video will be done soon so we'll see.

Yes it was choppy and is most of the time. I pull in with the wind at my back and reverse to control. The current pushes me towards the dock. Ideally, I would have the dock like an L to dock in the current with the wind from my left. Maybe next year. I also just received dock bumpers (D profile) to screw on but that will be my winter project. A few mods to do on the dock also...learning :D

Great pics. Penny looks fantastic. A very exciting time. I haven't noticed any real excessive roll but it may be that I was expecting it to roll that much, if that makes sense. Never a concern about stability or safety. Mine seems to be sensitive to side to side loading as well but is probably typical for this size of boat. I also have 2 - 70# batteries low in the boat, just aft of the helm bulkhead and this may help a lot for stability. I usually have 45 litres of water in the tank just forward of the helm bulkhead. (Had to move the water tank forward from the designed location when I lowered the cabin floor). Envious of that dock setup. Very convenient to go boating I would think. Doug

Hi Doug N
Thanks for this. Another day on the water with my wife and step son partaking in a bit of fishing. Sweet !

Been experimenting with weight distribution and things are a bit better now so will leave it as is.
WOT tops her out at 6.75 mph but at some point she went up to over 7.5 mph. I find the sweet spot to be around 4000 rpm / 5 mph - perfect slow speed cruising for us.

Feels very secure and having the portable head is aces 8)

More to come

Great report! As your motor gets broken in you should see top speeds over 7mph, my calculator showed a top speed of 7.5. But that is all theoretical. Glad you are enjoying your boat. :D

Hi Tom,

I am nowhere all that knowlegable with outboards but when I asked my wife to WOT for a few minutes, I glanced at the tach which registered 6000 rpm. Is this normal ? I thought these engines normally operate at around 5000 at WOT.

Also at times it felt like there was ventilation (?) going on. i.e. sounded like a bit of over-reving without any gain in performance. The stock prop is a four blade 10"x7" and always buried deep as well, even in chop. Not too sure what is going on but it seemed like it was not pushing for a second. Happened a few times only...

Edit... from the web i saw a chart for Merc 9.9 Pro Kicker. 5000-6000 rpm is normal.

Hi, Marc you should not be getting any ventilation if you have set your motor at the right depth. The big deflector plate on the motor should be even with the bottom of the keel +/- an inch for performance. Yes, the operating range at top speed is 5000-6000 rpm's but you want to measure your top speed at 6000 rpm's. You will of course never operate her at those rpm's except in special certain conditions. I would expect best fuel use would be around 4-4500rpm's.

Thanks Tom,

As an aside, the outboard would not go over 5000 at first, Does the break-in period, when parts are getting properly seated at different rpm and loads result in going up to 6000 rpm now ?

...while getting the best performance and reliability down the road. Outboard break in is uber important from what I've read.

I will check out the max soon and report speed and performance at various trim when there is calm weather. Love how she effortlessly plows thru waves while a bow rider would have to turn around and is such a safe feeling inside.

A few things I would have done differently with the build now that I'm spending some time sailing :D

After sailing season, the 40 lbs AGM battery and main switch will be relocated from the port aft locker to under the port seat in cabin for better weight distribution. New longer 4 AWG x 12 feet battery cable etc.. As it is, the battery, main switch and main fuse are in the worst possible space to access. The (original) underseat cooler will have to go to accomodate this change.

Marc
Thanks for the feedback

Marc, just amazing. I took a few mornings to read through your entire build over my coffee. I will glean much wisdom from your skill and process when I forge ahead with my own build. Congratulations, on both the boat and the family!

Hey Marc, sure looks great. It does look bows high.

Have you worked out any of the kinks after a couple months?

Hi fallguy1000,

The boat is on dry land now but yes I think the bugs have been worked out. I experimented with weight distribution and things are looking better with trim. She needs quite a bit forward, say 100-150 pounds towards the bow.

I also did the winterizing with new properly gapped plugs etc..the stock ones fitted were off spec quite a bit and also at different gaps.

Other bugs were mostly design related - things I should not have done or went too complicated but I can live with them. In retrospect I would not have installed the $$ cabin roof Bomar hatch and not place the AGM battery in the aft locker (should be under the port cabin seat for weight). Scratch the permanent under sole custom 12 gal gas tank - stick with cheaper portables and forget under sole gas hoses, fittings and building hassles (and worry) Use the space for a locker instead.

The rest is all good, design wise.
Can't wait for spring / summer 😁 It is going to be a long long winter 😩

Good to see more HMD19 being built !
Hope things are great with you.
Marc

High 80s here, so yeah, winter also.

Would that be a winter hurricane? Seems very late for that kind of weather.

Hey Fuzz, Jaysen, Jeff, fallguy1000 and Orange Quest :D
Good to read entries from you guys.

That's what separates boys from men 8)

We have friends at church which came to Canada (Montreal) from Oz - first thing was to shop for real boots, coat, mitts and toque. Man, they are in for one rude surprise  Told them to go out, embrace and enjoy winter with X country skiing or snow shoes because it will feel like a mood destroying depressing 5 months otherwise. Snowmobile is even better if you can afford that.

BTW, should I not get the "expert" label since I have built / splashed a BBC design ? (not that I am one tho)
