So a while ago I made a mistake....I didn't precoat my cleats when I affixed them to the stringers and hull. Up till this point I have focused on stuffing a rather obsessive amount of thickened epoxy in the corners and where ever there is end grain and large filets on the underside to ensure they are sealed. My plan is to try and paint 3 coats of unthickened epoxy on them all once complete. Is this plan going to work out or am I going to have deck issues with this approach. Thanks for any feedback
Cleat Question
Re: Cleat Question
I don't believe you will have any issues with adhesion. As long as your cleats weren't damp (it doesn't appear you used ply for the cleats, maybe store bought 1x).
As far as waterproofing, coating all of that area will suffice.
If you have concerns, glue a scrap piece of cleat to a piece of scrap ply. Let it dry for a week or so and chisel it apart.

Re: Cleat Question
Definitely not worth busting it out and starting over in my mind. Make sure you get some good coats of neat resin all over and build on!
Re: Cleat Question

Re: Cleat Question
My approach is to see if they break off.
Re: Cleat Question
So no worries on adhesion, they aren't coming off. My main concern was having exposed wood but think I have gotten pretty good at making it work. Here is a good picture of how I have been doing it. Basically I make a tub of thickened epoxy at the bottom, then fill the void with straight epoxy.

Re: Cleat Question
The textbook way to do these is to 45 or angle the bottom and tape them with fiberglass tapes. This eliminates stress risers and adds xtra holding power.
You all get to see my one time use of pink foam as livewell insulation here as well. If it delams it is ok.
