Bulbous bows

Post by fallguy1000 »

I am embarking on a difficult journey to build bulbous bows for the Skoota.

I have acquired the basic geometry from a designer from Japan.

I have acquired complicated building plans from a composites engineer from the Phillipines.

I will start to post some pictures of the work here.

Today, I am sending some drawings to David Halliday in Stuart, Florida in a tube and hoping he can help me make sure I don't mess up. The laminate work is really for professionals. I consider myself a seasoned amateur.

For fun, I added other stuff I built in the last week.

Been wondering how it's going. Interesting how those push forward. Might they save you in an unintentional rock or grounding by taking the blow before the hull? Dunno much about them. Wished I lived nearby to lend a hand. My talents extend clear up to the "hold your beer level"!

BTW, I was in Port Aransas last week taking wife on birthday birding vacation. If you still intend to build in Corpus Christi give a thought about checking out the builders boat show in November and hooking up with the Farley boat people.

There is a U Tube " Our Bulbous Bow addition on Sea Venture " , if you haven't already watched it yet , it didn't show the complete process but it might give you some ideas

The backbones are specified at 18mm, but I only have 12 and 6, so need to laminate to make 18mm; not buying ready cores.

This is going to be fun to follow along with. I see it done fairly often using a glass tube to start with.

The glass tube method is far easier...

This is an ultralight vessel; so we need ultralight parts; not fiberglass tubes. This BB also does not get filled with water like the glass tubes..
